In September 2018, at 20 years old, I set off on my very first solo travel trip to Asia and I’ve never looked back since. If you’ve never done it, solo travel can be daunting but I warn you, it is so addictive.
Solo travel in your 20’s offers complete and utter freedom. It’s the chance to embrace whatever adventures are in store for you and meet fantastic people along the way.
Since then I’ve gone on loads of Solo adventures to everywhere from the US to Australia. I hope that this blog inspires you to make the fantastic decision to travel alone in your 20s too.
Why travel solo?
Solo travel is lonely, It’s dangerous, It’s more expensive– All of these are common misconceptions about solo travelling but they couldn’t be further from the truth.
“Solo travel is lonely”
Don’t assume that ‘solo travelling’ means that you will be alone. In contrary, I never meet more people than when I’ve travelled by myself. This is because you’ll meet other people who are in the same boat.
No one wants to go away for months on end without speaking to another person. Travelling independently means that you have the flexibility to opt-in and out of doing things with others and you have the freedom to travel, exactly how you want to.
“Solo travel is dangerous”
As a female solo traveller in my early 20s, I can honestly say that I have rarely felt unsafe. There’s always someone around to ask for help and the more that you travel alone, the easier the whole thing will get.

“Solo travelling is more expensive”
Travelling solo can also be a lot cheaper. This is because you can make use of cheap hostel dorm rooms and you don’t have to compromise with anyone else. That means there’s nothing to stop you from impulsively booking that cheap flight or taking that overnight bus instead.
Solo travel destinations
I don’t think that there are any limitations on countries that you can travel solo. However, these are a few of my favourite ones that I’ve been too.
