I was in Barcelona with a couple of girlfriends. It was our first morning in the city and we decided to wake up early and go for a walk. If you’ve visited then you’ll know, Barcelona sleeps in. The streets were empty midweek at 8 and the air was humid yet comfortable enough to hike. We left the neighbourhood that our Airbnb was in and quickly got lost in a maze of narrow dark streets, covered in a canopy of trees. And then, a coffee shop- bold, bright, welcoming and so modern in contrast to all of the old gothic buildings around it.

Syra Coffee is one of a few new ‘Australian-style’ coffee houses that have popped up in the city in recent years. They serve single-origin coffee that is fully traceable, ethical and environmentally sustainable. This whole on-the-wall coffee shop which now has locations all across Spain, was founded with the simple purpose ‘to make good coffee, everyone’s daily habit’ and they’ve been winning over Barcelona locals since 2015 doing just that.
A delicious flat white in hand, we hiked up to the nearby, Parc de Montijuic, and followed the coastal path with gorgeous sea views and the city sprawled out beneath us. After an hour or so, we realised how high we had climbed and with plenty more sightseeing and caffeinating on the agenda for the day, we took the cable car back down.
